Donald E. Sollars

Donald E. Sollars, 80, of Armstrong, departed this life at 6:13 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville.

A celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Hope United Church of Christ, 23334 State Route 49, Armstrong. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service at the church. Rev Frank Hoss will officiate. Burial will follow at Emberry Cemetery.

Mr. Sollars was born Sept. 26, 1927, at Potomac, the son of Frank and Mabel Evans Sollars. He married his beloved wife, Delores June Henderson July 8, 1972. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Jan (Kevin) Edwards; three stepsons, Dan (Jillene) Henderson of Royal, Dave (Pattilee) Henderson of Cary, N.C., and Mike Henderson of Alma, Wis.; two grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. His parents and two sisters preceded Mr. Sollars in death.

He was a graduate of Potomac High School then served in the Navy before going to and graduating from Southern Illinois University. Don was a former livestock dealer and would later retire from Black’s Hardware in 1994. He volunteered as a “Red Vest” at Provena Medical Center, which he truly loved and was loved by all, but he had to finally give it up due to his health. When you talk about a “Die Hard” Cub fan, Don was one. This was passed on to him from his mother.

He loved and played softball until he was 42. When he was younger, he coached Little League. He loved to golf, bowl and was an avid Illini fan and enjoyed life to the fullest. Don was a member of the Hope United Church of Christ where he took an active part and will be greatly missed by his church family.
